Adolescent Medicine is now accepting referrals for youth aged 12 to 17 years from the Edmonton region* , with complex or chronic issues that require consultation by a subspecialist. Adolescent Medicine provides specialized consultative adolescent services and works collaboratively with all members of the patient’s care team.
Examples of reasons to consider referral to Adolescent Medicine:1. Adolescents with complex or chronic health conditions
- Sexual health and contraception
- Substance use
- Adherence to treatment
- Developmental considerations for adolescents pre/post-transplant
- Support in transition to adult healthcare
- Long COVID/Post COVID Condition fatigue and mental health
2. Gender Incongruent Children and Youth
- Youth identifying as transgender, non-binary or questioning for gender-affirming care - please refer to Gender Program at UAH. Currently accepting referrals for youth 15 and under. Please contact Gender Program 780-407-6693 for the referral form.
Please refer patients with the following primary concerns to alternative services:- Primary care
- Emergency/crisis referrals
- Mental health symptoms or substance use diagnoses alone, without other chronic health concerns or complexity
- Psychosis or mania symptoms
- Oppositional/disruptive behaviors
- Neurodevelopmental disorders such as Obsessive-compulsive disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Tics, and Tourette's Syndrome, Learning Disorders
- Somatic symptoms and related disorders
- Concurrent substance use disorders
- Ambulatory Eating Disorder care
